Grand Strand Humane Society Faces Challenges Amid Overwhelming Intake

Shelter Urges Honesty from Pet Owners as Resources Are Stretched Thin

Exclusive

The Grand Strand Humane Society (GSHS) in Myrtle Beach is grappling with an influx of animals, exacerbated by individuals misrepresenting their pets as strays during surrender.

Executive Director Jess Wnuk expressed concern over this trend, noting that such actions divert critical resources and complicate the shelter's operations.

GSHS primarily serves animals within the city limits of Myrtle Beach, while neighboring jurisdictions have their own facilities.

Despite these challenges, the shelter remains committed to its mission.

Currently, GSHS houses 114 dogs and over 200 cats, all in need of loving homes.

To address the overcrowding, the shelter plans to waive adoption fees in September, aiming to encourage more adoptions and alleviate the strain on resources.

Applications are available online for those interested in adopting or fostering.

In a significant development, GSHS is progressing toward a new facility.

After a 2021 pest infestation forced the closure of their original building, the shelter has been operating from multiple temporary locations.

In December 2024, all necessary permits were submitted for a new facility on Piedmont Avenue off Waterside Drive near the Intracoastal Waterway.

Construction costs have risen to an estimated $10 to $11 million, up from the initial $6.5 million projection.

Despite financial challenges, the shelter plans to break ground in 2025, with completion expected by early 2026.

Community support remains vital during this transitional period.

GSHS encourages residents to consider adoption, fostering, or donations to help provide care for the animals.
