Major Road Expansion Projects Set to Transform Horry County's Transportation Landscape

Highway 31 Extension and Carolina Forest Interchange Aim to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

Horry County is on the brink of significant transportation enhancements, with two major road expansion projects poised to reshape the region's infrastructure.

The first initiative involves the extension of Highway 31, also known as the Carolina Bays Parkway, from its current terminus at SC Highway 9 to the North Carolina state line.

This project, a collaborative effort between the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, aims to improve regional connectivity and reduce congestion on local roadways. The estimated cost for this extension is approximately $797 million, with North Carolina contributing $610.9 million and South Carolina allocating $186 million. Planning and development are actively underway, with public input being sought to finalize the project's details.

In addition to the Highway 31 extension, Horry County is advancing plans for a new interchange in the Carolina Forest area.

This interchange will connect Augusta Plantation Drive and Revolutionary War Way to Highway 31, providing a much-needed alternative route for residents and visitors.

The project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on U.S. Highway 501 and improve access to the rapidly growing Carolina Forest community. The county has already purchased 23 acres of land for $1.15 million to facilitate this development. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2025, with completion projected by 2028.

These projects are part of the broader RIDE 3 and upcoming RIDE 4 initiatives, which are funded through a one-cent sales tax dedicated to road improvements in Horry County.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in upcoming community meetings to provide input and stay informed about these transformative projects. The county's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure underscores its dedication to accommodating growth and improving the quality of life for all who live in and visit Horry County.
