Myrtle Beach Proposes New Regulations for Electric Scooters |
City Officials Aim to Enhance Safety Amid Rising Incidents |
The Myrtle Beach Police Department is advocating for a new ordinance to regulate electric scooters within city limits.
One of the main concerns is scooters disregarding traffic signals and operating at excessive speeds.
In 2023, there were 12 reported collisions involving e-scooters striking vehicles in the city.
South Carolina lacks statewide traffic laws for e-scooters, leaving municipalities to establish their own regulations.
The proposed ordinance would require e-scooters to use bike lanes, avoid sidewalks, maintain appropriate speeds, and travel with traffic flow.
Highways like 501 and 17 would be off-limits to e-scooters under the new rules.
City officials are reviewing similar regulations from other cities to inform their approach.
In 2023, North Myrtle Beach implemented rules prohibiting unlicensed e-scooter companies from leaving devices on public property.
Under the proposed Myrtle Beach ordinance, violations could result in impoundment and fines.
The city council has yet to schedule a vote on the ordinance.
Officer Longshore emphasized the goal is to ensure safe scooter operation without infringing on personal freedoms.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming council meetings regarding this issue.
