‘Tiger King’ Star Doc Antle Sentenced to One Year in Federal Prison

Myrtle Beach Safari Owner Faces Consequences for Wildlife Trafficking and Money Laundering

Exclusive

Bhagavan "Doc" Antle, renowned for his role in the Netflix series "Tiger King," has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison.

This decision follows his guilty plea to charges of wildlife trafficking and money laundering.

Antle, the proprietor of Myrtle Beach Safari, admitted to illegally purchasing and selling endangered species, including cheetahs, lions, tigers, and a juvenile chimpanzee.

These actions were in direct violation of the Lacey Act, which prohibits the trafficking of illegally obtained wildlife.

In addition to his prison term, Antle was fined $55,000 and will serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence.

He is also required to forfeit three chimpanzees acquired unlawfully.

Authorities revealed that Antle laundered over $500,000, believing the funds were proceeds from a human smuggling operation.

He attempted to conceal these transactions by funneling the money through his nonprofit organization, the Rare Species Fund, and disguising payments as donations.

Despite portraying himself as a conservationist, Antle's actions have been deemed both unlawful and unethical.

His sentencing marks a significant development in the ongoing legal repercussions faced by individuals associated with the "Tiger King" series.

As of now, Myrtle Beach Safari remains operational, offering tours by reservation only.

However, the future of the facility may be impacted by Antle's legal challenges and the forfeiture of certain animals.

Local residents and animal rights advocates have expressed mixed reactions to the sentencing, with some emphasizing the importance of upholding wildlife protection laws.

Others remain concerned about the welfare of the animals currently housed at the safari.

This case underscores the complexities and ethical considerations inherent in wildlife conservation and the exotic animal trade.

It serves as a reminder of the legal obligations and moral responsibilities that come with the care and exhibition of endangered species.

As the community reflects on these events, the hope is for a renewed commitment to genuine conservation efforts and the ethical treatment of all wildlife.
