5 Star Fabulous - Local Business Spotlight

Wiseguys

The Story Behind Wiseguys: More Than Just a Bar

Owner Phil, a self-proclaimed gangster and horror movie enthusiast, is coming up on his fifth year of owning Wiseguys, a local pub a few blocks from the beach. Located at 2002 N. Kings Hwy, has earned over a thousand Google reviews.

Before it became the popular hangout it is today, the spot was a place called Knuckleheads.

Phil bought the business, gutted and remodeled the entire space, and renamed it. He wanted a fun theme, so he chose the name Wiseguys and brought in elements from his favorite gangster and horror movies.

If you look closely, you’ll see the influence everywhere. From portraits of The Sopranos and other mobsters on the walls to a full-size Michael Myers statue guarding the front door, the place is a true reflection of Phil's personality. He even had a graffiti artist friend spray-paint portraits of notorious figures like John Gotti and Lucky Luciano on the walls.

Food, Drinks, and the Game

Their menu is filled with unique and delicious options, like the famous Ultimate Nachos and smash burgers. And if you're feeling adventurous, you have to try the donut smash burger, which uses a glazed donut as a bun. The best part? Everything is made in-house, from the homemade meatballs to the mozzarella sticks.

The specials change weekly, and the happy hour runs from Monday to Friday. But this isn't your typical happy hour where bars try to get rid of old stock. Wiseguys offers specials on premium drinks because, as Phil puts it, "We give people what they're drinking, at a discount."

Wiseguys is also a prime spot for sports fans, with an assortment of  of TVs showing all the major sports packages and fights.

Win a Trip for Two To Fabulous Las Vegas!

A current promotion going on is the chance to win a trip for two to Las Vegas. Each time you visit, you get a punch card. Bring your punch card and hang out for the Superbowl for a chance to win the vacation!

(Ask your bartender for details)

Community and Shout Outs

So, what does Phil want everyone to know about Wiseguys? "We're just a local pub, but we get a lot of locals and a lot of tourists," he says. The atmosphere is laid-back and fun, a dark but vibrant bar with great bartenders.

"I want to give a  huge shout-out to my amazing staff, especially my manager, Laura. . "She's the backbone behind the whole operation," he says. She's been with me  since day one and also manages my sushi restaurant, Koi, on 77th Avenue.

So, whether you're a local looking for a new hangout or a tourist passing through, Wiseguys is the place to be for great food, good company, and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

I was so hungry that I started to dig into my Ultimate Nachos before taking a picture- Below- half eaten Ultimate Nachos :)

I found a picture of the Ultimate Nachos from a Google Review.

Horry County is set for major transportation upgrades, highlighted by two large-scale road projects designed to boost regional connectivity and ease traffic flow.

Highway 31—also called the Carolina Bays Parkway—will be extended from SC Highway 9 northward to the North Carolina state line. This $797 million extension, jointly funded by both Carolinas’ departments of transportation, aims to reduce congestion and streamline travel between the states.

Meanwhile, a new interchange at Carolina Forest will link Augusta Plantation Drive and Revolutionary War Way to Highway 31. This addition will ease pressure on U.S. Highway 501 and improve access to the fast-growing Carolina Forest area, with construction likely starting in 2025.

These efforts, part of the RIDE 3 and future RIDE 4 initiatives, reflect the county’s focus on supporting growth and enhancing local quality of life.

As September arrives and warmth lingers, Conway, South Carolina, transforms into the “City of Halloween,” drawing locals and visitors alike with its festive spirit.

At the heart of the celebration are 15-foot skeletons, iconic symbols that tower over downtown, maintained by dedicated volunteers like Tracy Bush.

Bush, recently retired, has taken on the meticulous task of repairing these giant figures, assembling animatronics, and even repainting a homecoming carriage in preparation for the festivities.

Over 130 volunteers, led by holiday coordinator Bess Harry, have united to transform the city, a testament to Conway’s strong community ties.

Halloween in Conway has evolved from simple pumpkin displays to a month-long festival with 200-plus events, including the Tunnel of Bones and a skeleton disco.

City Administrator Adam Emrick notes the event’s uniqueness and its substantial boost to local businesses, as downtown saw 100,000 more October visitors than just five years ago.

The passionate teamwork ensures Conway’s Halloween magic continues to grow each year.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department is pushing for a new ordinance to better regulate electric scooters around town.

Officer Drew Longshore raised concerns about e-scooters running red lights, speeding, and posing risks on city streets.

In 2023, there were 12 reported e-scooter collisions with vehicles, highlighting the need for action.

Since South Carolina offers no statewide scooter laws, cities like Myrtle Beach are crafting their own solutions.

The proposed rules would keep e-scooters in bike lanes, off sidewalks, require appropriate speeds, and restrict them from highways such as 501 and 17.

Some locals,  worry the changes will disrupt commutes. Others,  support stronger safety measures, especially for pedestrians.

Violations could mean fines or even impoundment.

The city council is still weighing its options and encourages residents to stay updated on future meetings.
