Trivia Question❓

In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, what famous annual event takes place on Ocean Boulevard featuring elaborately decorated golf carts and showcasing the local community spirit?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Joke Of The Day

Why is it illegal for a man living in North Carolina to be buried in South Carolina?

 Because he's alive!

There is ALWAYS Something NEW Vendor Palooza!

This weekend, get ready to shop 'til you drop at Vendor Palooza, the premier indoor shopping event you won't want to miss!

"Vendor Palooza is an indoor shopping experience," says James Kolpin of Parking Lot Takeover, the company putting on the event.

The company name often confuses people because it was born out of a time when they started in a parking lot, doing these events for local people during COVID-19. Kolpin and his team just wanted to give local community members a place to display their goods and services when no one else was doing anything.

Since then, the event has grown to be a big indoor show with over 160 vendors from both North and South Carolina, as well as a few from the Georgia area and beyond.

This year, Vendor Palooza is hosting a food drive for the North Myrtle Beach and Little River Kiwanis Club. If you bring a non-perishable food item, you'll receive a ticket for a chance to win one of over 75 different raffle prizes donated by the various vendors.

There is also a special raffle for a gigantic floral arrangement donated by Made by G. This beautiful arrangement is valued at over $500, and tickets are $5.

The event is happening this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Admission to the event itself is free, but the city charges a $5 parking fee. The event is happening at the  Myrtle Beach Sports Center located at 2115 Sports Center Blvd.

The event is located at the Convention Center.

It's connected to the same parking lot and can be accessed from the back side of the lot behind Broadway at the Beach or via entrances off of  Oak Street.

Kolpin says you might want to arrive early, as last year they had a line wrapped around the building waiting to get in.

The first 50 adults to arrive on both Saturday and Sunday will receive a free swag bag. These bags are filled with small trinket items from some of the vendors, as well as coupons and business cards.

With food trucks and drink vendors, you can make a day of it without ever having to leave. People can walk around and shop all day. For more information, check out their Facebook page or visit the website at Parkinglottakeover.com

Area News...

Myrtle Beach is experiencing a wetter-than-usual August, with recent rainfall totals soaring above the norm.

The National Weather Service reports that the area received 3.89 inches of rain in just one week, far surpassing the expected 1.25 inches.

North Myrtle Beach saw nearly 7 inches over two weeks, well above the typical levels.

Meteorologist Jordan Baker attributes the persistent downpours and cloudy skies to the collision between a high-pressure cold front and warm ocean air, creating an extended pattern of showers and thunderstorms.

A flash flood watch remains in effect as saturated ground raises the risk of localized flooding, especially with more slow-moving storms expected.

Businesses like Shark Wake Park and 810 Billiards and Bowling are adapting, with more residents and visitors turning to indoor attractions such as Ripley's Aquarium and WonderWorks.

Despite the rain, Myrtle Beach continues to offer engaging activities for all.

Myrtle Beach is launching a modern rebranding initiative, unveiling a new logo designed to update its image while preserving the historic city seal from 1976.

Meredith Denari, Director of Communications and Creative Services, confirmed that the fresh logo will represent the city’s public face, as the classic seal remains reserved for official documents.

The city, after soliciting local vendors for the project, ultimately selected a highly experienced municipal branding agency from a pool of 20 respondents.

Community input is central, with an upcoming survey aimed at capturing residents’ ideas and priorities.

Many locals hope the new design reflects Myrtle Beach’s tropical charm as well as highlights key landmarks such as the Arts and Innovation District and Coastal Carolina University.

This branding effort supports the city’s broader downtown revitalization, ensuring Myrtle Beach honors its heritage while embracing ongoing growth and innovation.

A Little Love for Cucumbers

It's August, and we're nearing the end of cucumber season.

I remember, (and you might too) my grandma’s backyard.  Her garden was her pride and joy, a little patch of earth where she worked magic.

Pickling day was the real showstopper. The kitchen would get steamy, filled with the sharp, sweet smell of vinegar and spices. She'd line up the Mason jars on the counter each one a promise of future deliciousness.

The cucumber has an interesting  story, especially when you look at it through a Southern lens.

It’s not just a crisp crunchy slice for your salad; it's a real part of the history and economy of places like South Carolina.

Believe it or not, these green guys weren't always in America. They came over with the colonists, and the warm, muggy Southern climate was basically a perfect fit.

Here in South Carolina, they're a huge deal. The state grows a ton of them, and not just for salads. A lot of these cucumbers are destined for a far more delicious fate: pickles!  And who doesn't love a fried pickle!

From tangy bread and butter pickles to the classic dill spears, these cucumbers are a key part of so many Southern meals. They're also the star of simple, refreshing salads—perfect for beating that summer heat.

So next time you're munching on a pickle or a cool cucumber slice, just think about all that South Carolina sunshine that went into growing it. It's more than just a vegetable; it's a piece of Southern tradition.

Cucumbers are a healthy and hydrating vegetable that offer numerous health benefits.

They are low in calories but high in nutrients like vitamin K, potassium, and antioxidants.

Cucumbers may help with weight management, hydration, digestion, and skin health.

They can also reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar levels.

Additionally, cucumbers contain compounds that may help prevent cancer and improve heart health.

Incorporating cucumbers into your diet can provide a range of health benefits, making them a great addition to a balanced and nutritious eating plan.
